Survey of Community-Based Archives

The Community Archives Collaborative (CAC) seeks to formalize partnerships between community-based archives (CBAs) by creating a space for practitioners across the country to collaborate, share skills, trainings, and best practices, leverage pooled resources, and provide peer-to-peer mentoring in order to support long-term sustainability and growth at our institutions.

With a planning grant from the National Historical Publications & Records Commission (NHPRC), representatives from four community-based archives (SAADA, Densho, Texas After Violence Project, and Interference Archive) convened along with CBA advocates Bergis Jules and Michelle Caswell in Chicago in November 2019. During a three-day workshop, the participants shared experiences from their respective organizations, discussed their approaches to various challenges, engaged in trainings on media relations (led by Angilee Shah) and fundraising (led by Staci Coomer), and explored possibilities for collaboration. The group emerged from the workshop with an abiding commitment to working together and to further developing the collaborative.

The CAC has received an implementation grant from NHPRC (beginning January 2021) and is looking to include more community-based archives in shaping and developing the collaborative further. The survey below, which takes about 15 minutes to complete, will help guide the next stages of the Community Archives Collaborative. We would be grateful for your input and participation!

This survey is open to U.S.-based community-based archives. The first 20 responses will be used to organize two free (virtual) trainings in September 2020 for CBA practitioners.
