"Hindoo wants a job"



DESCRIPTION
Short note from the October 26, 1907 edition of the Oregonian describing the story of Schawa Singh, who had previously been stationed in Nankin as a marshal of the consular court. In the note, Singh was unemployed, and having applied to [Portland] Mayor Lane for employment in some branch of the city service." Singh had been quoted as desiring to "earn sufficient money to pay his expenses to Manila."
