The Hindusthanee Student (September 1915)
DESCRIPTION
The September 1915 issue of The Hindusthanee Student (Vol. 2, No. 1), was a special "Convention Number" volume, published in two parts -- the first from Nalanda Club in Berkeley, California, the second from New York -- to correspond with the International Hindustanee Students' Convention (IHSC) at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. Includes a transcript of the inaugural address by K.D. Shastri, the chairman of the IHSC, and a report of the convention proceedings. Also included are two photographs from the convention: a group shot of the attendees, and the "India Block" exhibit at the exposition. Another section of the issue contains photographs of various members of the IHSC, including Rafidin Ahmed, V.P. Iyer, Hemendra Kishor Rashit, D.K. Choudhury, V. Kokatnur, Prafulla K. Bose, and K.C. Basu.
The second part of the issue includes several articles and letters focused on the Bengali scientist and writer J.C. Bose: "To Jagadis Chandra Bose" by Rabindranath Tagore; "Human Element in Plants" by Jagadis Chandra Bose, "An English View of Dr. Bose" by the editor of The Spectator, "Telegraphing Without Wires" by H.J.W. Dam (a project with which Bose was involved), Other articles feature are listed as follows: "The Cosmopolitan Movement" by William Howard Taft, "Hindu Students and the American Public" by A.U. Pope, "An Appeal to Our Students at Home" by V.P. Iyer, " Evolving an Education" by H.J. Stern, "The World's Federation of Hindusthanee Students" by G.K. Banerjee, "Hindu Sociology" by Benoy Kumar Sarkar, and "The University Extension Divisions in America" by Louise E. Reber. Included also are three photographs: Dr. and Mrs. Bose with students at the home of Dr. Edwin Herbert Lewis in Chicago; a portrait of Arthur U. Pope; and, members of the Illinois Chapter of HAA 1914.
