Oral History Interview with Dev R. Manhas
DESCRIPTION
Dr. Manhas grew up in the state of Jammu-Kashmir and received his MBBS degree from Government Medical College Amritsar (Punjab). He came to the University of Washington in 1967 to do his residency and subsequently specialized as a cardio-thoracic surgeon. He has been practicing in the Seattle area since his arrival and retired in March 2007 as a well-respected physician in his field. He has affiliated with the UW Medical School as an adjunct professor, Swedish Hospital and is a member of several professional organizations. Dr. Manhas is one of the founding members of the Indian American Political Advocacy Council (IAPAC), a non-profit organization registered in WA in 1994 to mobilize the Indian American community to participate in the political process of the country. He was the president of the group, 1998-99. Since the late 1990s, Dr. Manhas has been associated with the Hindu Temple and Cultural Center, Bothell. Dr. Manhas was instrumental in finalizing the Phase I plans for the temple and in driving the process to completion. Dr. Manhas lives on Mercer Island with his wife Asha. He has a son, Subeer, and two daughters, Davita and Angeli. In his spare time, Dr. Manhas enjoys spending time with his grandchildren and playing golf.
