"'India in America' Symposium Focuses on California Indians"; "Conference on Sri Lankan Crisis To Be Held Oct. 25 at UCLA"

DESCRIPTION
Two newspaper clippings from India-West featured in the scrapbook of Dr. Amarjit Marwah.

The first, an article by Michel W. Potts entitled "'India in America' Symposium Focuses on California Indians" and dated May 2, 1986, discusses a UCLA-hosted symposium called "India in America: The Immigrant Experience." Dr. Amarjit Marwah, president of the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission, cohosted the event alongside Prof. Stanley Wolpert, notable historian of India. Other speakers included Prof. Karen Leonard, Prof. Roger Daniels, Prof. Bruce La Brack, Prof. M.C. Madhavan, Prof. Dilip Basu, and Indian Consul General Deb Mukarji.

The second, an article by Vincent DiGirolamo entitled "Conference on Sri Lankan Crisis To Be Held Oct. 25 at UCLA" and dated October 3, 1986, describes a planned conference on the Sri Lankan Civil War sponsored by the UCLA Committee on South and Southeast Asian Studies and the human rights organization International Alert. Members from the nonviolent Tamil United Liberation Front had been invited to participate; organizers were reluctant to name all the participants for fear of harassment, but revealed the speaker list would include TULF president Siva Sithamparam, Dame Judith Hart, a representative of Amnesty International, and a number of UCLA faculty members.
