Oral history interview with Teekay, conducted by Philadelphia Fellow Maha Rahman.

Teekay is 30 years old and lives just outside of Philadelphia. She recalls growing up in New York just after 9/11 and seeing her family and community face discrimination. She also shares her complicated relationship with her identity throughout her life. She explains that college was a transformative period in her life in which she formed new personal values through friendships–both with other Bengalis and friends of different cultures– and reconnected with her identity through cultural groups and activities like her dance team. She highly values familial connection, as she has very close relationships with women in her family, and is used to living with her extended family in the Bangladeshi tradition. She also shares her experience as a daughter and how it differed from that of her brothers, especially in regard to education, marriage, and career. Teekay is the first woman in her family to graduate college. By recounting her own experiences, as well as the experiences of her family, Teekay reveals how her personal principles of self-sufficiency and closeness with family have been shaped by the many different people and perspectives she has encountered in life.
