DESCRIPTION
Oral history interview with Nusrat Faruk, conducted by Philadelphia Fellow Maha Rahman.

Nusrat Faruk is 34 years old and lives just outside of Philadelphia. She grew up in Sylhet, Bangladesh, where she studied in English Medium schools under a British curriculum and later attended university in the UK. She grew up in a big family, surrounded by cousins, and now lives with her husband’s family. In her interview, Nusrat reflects on the cultural and social differences she observed living in both Bangladesh and the West and how these realities diverged from her expectations. She also shares her experience as both a daughter and a mother, noting the role of maternal labor in Bangladeshi households. Through stories from her childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, Nusrat shares her family’s values and teachings on education, religion, and marriage, and explains how the experiences of her parents have shaped her own life decisions and beliefs.
