This is a factsheet that provides basic information about hate crimes. It explains what a hate crime is, how it differs from other crimes, and the impact it has on the victim and the community. The factsheet also discusses the difference between a bias/hate incident and a hate crime, why hate crimes occur, and the laws against them. It provides examples of hate crimes against South Asians and explains why they are targeted. The document also provides recommendations for addressing and preventing hate crimes and bias incidents, including improving community policing and responsiveness, investigating and prosecuting hate crimes, tracking and monitoring them, creating rapid response networks, enabling community members to report hate crimes, enacting stronger laws to prevent them, and more.
