Joint letter to President Barack Obama

DESCRIPTION
This is a joint letter from multiple Asian American and Pacific Islander organizations to President Barack Obama, urging him to veto the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012 (NDAA) if it contains provisions that authorize indefinite military detention without charge or trial. The letter expresses concern about Sections 1021 and 1022 of the House-Senate conference committee report, which would give any president the authority to put terrorism suspects found anywhere in the world into indefinite military detention without charge or trial. The organizations are particularly concerned about the impact of these provisions on Muslim, Arab, Sikh, and South Asian Americans, who have been subjected to high rates of racial profiling since the September 11th attacks. The letter also references the Japanese American internment during World War II as a cautionary example of what can happen when fundamental rights are denied.
