Canada and India (January 1916)

DESCRIPTION
The January 1916 edition of Canada and India: A Journal of Information and Conciliation (Vol. 2, No. 1) opens with the tagline "The Strongest of all British Bonds are Knowledge and Sympathy." As a whole, the majority of the articles published in the journal emphasized the Indian nationalist movement, with several offering critical takes on the British empire. Several of the articles report the activities of the Indian National Congress and the development of the India Home Rule League. One article titled "Hindus in British Columbia" and the treatment received in Canada and the recommendation of an experienced official to represent and protect the interests of the "Hindu" immigrants. Another interesting article, the longest in the issue, presents a "Confession of Mewa Singh," the Vancouver-based Sikh immigrant who shot and killed W.C. Hopkinson, a police officer who was instrumental in keeping the Sikh passengers of the Komagatu Maru from disembarking into Canada and for infiltrating the Ghadar movement.
