A heavy wooden vase, carried

DESCRIPTION
This photograph was taken in Cumberland Village in Guyana the year before Gaiutra Bahadur's family left for America. Here, the archival creators fellow is sitting in the living room of the Bahadur family home, built by her grandfather born on a ship from India to Guyana a mile from the plantation where he worked as a sugar cane cutter. To the right, artificial flowers sit in a heavy wooden vase that was, except for books, photographs and documents, the only thing Gaiutra's family brought with them to the United States. It was the present that Gaiutra's maternal grandmother gave to her parents on their wedding day. It now sits in their living room in New Jersey.
