Oral History Interview with Lalita and Lachhaman Das



DESCRIPTION
Lachhaman and Lalita Das immigrated to the United States during the 1960s. Lachhaman was accepted to the master's program at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1964. After a few years in New York City, Lachhaman and Lalita transferred to Houston, where Lachhaman continued working at Pan American Airways developing a computerized application of aircraft maintenance. The family moved to Clear Lake and have lived there since 1975. Lalita owned Worldwide Travel, the first Indian travel agency in Houston, which operated from 1976 to 1999. Lachhaman and Lalita were involved with the Indian Cultural Centre, the Hindu Worship Society, and India House. In their time with the Indian Cultural Centre, they were involved with the naming of the Mahatma Gandhi District and the installation of the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Hermann Park in 2003.
