Family Portrait at Ampang House
DESCRIPTION
"Lorraine and Padma's first visit to India. The three of them took a flight chartered by Indian university students out of Detroit which took six hops to get to Bombay. It was not a new plane, and it never made the trip back because the student organization couldn't afford the fuel for the return flight. They had to borrow money from a friend to get home on SwissAir. They remained friends with that friend for their whole lives. On that trip, they stayed at the family home called Ampang House, in suite with a "Western toilet" and a shower. Sadly, JCK's father passed away in July 1960 and never met Lorraine. They stayed from early June to early September. Lorraine focused on learning Indian cooking from Ambuja, her mother in law and Kamala, her sister in law, taking copious notes that were handed down to her daughter Maya (me). It was a sign of her generosity that Ambuja invited Lorraine into the kitchen, giving her small tasks and making her feel useful. The servants were very interested in her activities in the kitchen." --Maya Kaimal
