(Making) Queer Family

These interviews and ephemera chart the evolution of Satrang and other South Asian queer communities to include their families and queer families with children. According to Supriya Bharadwaj, Family Day, established in 2017, marks the moment when Satrang moved away from a focus on individual needs to a focus on the broader community. This fostered an opportunity to include blood families and chosen families in Satrang. More members were also having children, which sparked a new need and is reflected in new programming and outreach. Also in the audio recording, Rayman Mathoda and Avantika Shahi speak about queer parenthood and their work in supporting the nascent Desi Rainbow Parents & Allies, which was founded in 2017 in New Jersey to provide resources and support to families with queer family members. You can watch a recording of one of their sponsored events below.

This is a recording of a recent conversation between Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal and Raymond Mathoda. The two discuss policy and legislation, and the future for trans and queer children and individuals, particularly in South Asia and its diaspora. Together, they think through what it means to parent queer children and push for change within the U.S. They discuss how attitudes have shifted and the need to continue to advocate so that every child is fully supported both by one’s own family, community, and society.
