American Backlash: Terrorists Bring War Home in More Ways than One

DESCRIPTION
This is a publication from South Asian American Leaders of Tomorrow (SAALT) released in 2001. The report documents the backlash against Americans of South Asian or Middle Eastern descent in the week following the September 11th attack. The report states that there were 645 incidents of backlash during this period, ranging from racial jokes to serious hate crimes involving assault, arson, and shootings. The report also provides recommendations for preventing backlash incidents from occurring again. These recommendations include stronger hate crime laws, better training for law enforcement in addressing and prosecuting hate crimes, and long-term initiatives to promote tolerance and multicultural understanding.
