Biographical History
A Hawaii-based, Hindu spiritual organization, Lord of the Universe Society (LOTUS) was established in 1989 by Dipankar Sengupta. Its community activities center around worship at the Healing Stones of Wahiawa, which are three large boulders near Honolulu. At the inception of LOTUS, the three stones were declared by a local Hindu priest to be the images of the Hindu god Shiva, the sacred bull Nandi and the god Ganesha.
The LOTUS constitution, accepted by its members in November 1989, states that the organization's objective is "to promote and enhance the understanding and practice of spiritual, philosophical, and cultural ideals through devotional activities and discourses at the historic Healing Stone at Wahiawa."
This collection is composed of Volumes 1-16 of Samachar, the newsletter of the Lord of the Universe Society (LOTUS). Published bi-monthly, its aim was to highlight information, issues, and events of interest to LOTUS community members. Most issues feature these sections: Editor's Desk, Community News, Feature Article, and Calendar. Samachar illustrates LOTUS involvement with the broader Honolulu community and local institutions and also with India-based organizations.
