About the Collection

Collection Description
This collection contains items related to two efforts made by Chicago-resident Sadruddin Noorani to commemorate the city's Bangladeshi-American community and their civic contributions. A 1997 effort resulted in the dedication of an honorary street name, "Sheikh Mujib Way," on Devon Avenue from North Ravenswood Avenue to North Damen Avenue in Chicago. The request was made by Noorani to the 50th Ward Aldermanic Office in July 1997. Sheikh Mujib was the founder and a Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Items in this collection that are related to this effort include the Chicago City Council's meeting proceeding notes, proclamation, and work order for Sheikh Mujib Way. A second effort resulted in the 1998 Chicago City Council resolution to honor the late Fazlur Rahman Khan with a reception to celebrate the arrival of the "Khan Sculpture" in Chicago. Khan, an architect and engineer from Bangladesh, designed the Sears Tower (now Willis Tower), the tallest building in the world until 1998, and the 100-story John Hancock Center. Related items in this collection include letters from then-governor Jim Edgar and then-president Bill Clinton, acknowledging Khan's major and lasting contributions to Chicago.
