About the Collection
Collection Description
SAALT's leadership provided the following description for the organization as it sunsetted in September 2024:
South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) was a national organization from 2000 - 2024.
SAALT started as a leadership development organization in 2000 for South Asian Americans.
Following 9/11, the organization changed its mission to focus on protecting the civil rights of all South Asians. This was in response to the interpersonal and state violence aimed at American Muslim, Arab, and South Asian communities. SAALT used federal policy and advocacy as its primary strategy for social change.
In its last 10 years, SAALT began shifting its work more explicitly towards racial justice. The organization began challenging the systems and structures of racism upheld by our government through federal policy.
In its last 5 years, SAALT began grappling with caste– an ancient homegrown oppression. During this time, the organization shifted to a co-directorship model, began anti-caste political education as staff and board, and entered a period of chrysalis. In 2024, the organization made the decision to sunset.
This collection is a selection of materials produced by the organization which reflects these shifts across its 24 year history.
