Dr. Mohammed Zahid Hossain was born in Khulna, Bangladesh and was the eldest of 8 children. Dr. Hossain studied in Khulna and then moved to Dhaka to pursue his bachelor's and master's degrees from Dhaka University in Biochemistry. After graduating, Dr. Hossain worked as a lecturer at Dhaka University before winning the prestigious East-West Center Scholarship.

She earned her MS (1988) and PhD (1993) from Northwestern University. Dr. Gnanapragasam joined Seattle University as an Assistant Professor in 1993, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1998.
