On a sweltering summer day last July, I finally found a used copy of Gauri Gill’s The Americans (2008) at a bookstore in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago. I gushed to the clerk at the register, who momentarily withheld the transaction to enviously flip through its pages before I took it in my possession.
