After immigrating to New York, Monowara wanted to lead a better life, and for her that meant giving her son a good education and working to provide for him.

Rashed Matin was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh and immigrated to the United States in 1992 because he got a student visa. His goal was to get an American education and college degree and he is proud that he was able to accomplish that.
Farida Matin Oral History Interview
Oral history interview with Farida Matin on August 8th, 2022, conducted by Subat Matin. Farida Matin was born in Sandwip, Bangladesh, but grew up in the city of Chittagong. She spent a lot of time in Sandwip visiting her family whenever she had off from school. Farida first immigrated to the United States in 1993 and lived with her father and uncles in a small apartment in Brooklyn.

He came through a visit visa with his wife and had to leave behind his four children in order to establish his life in America first.

Oral history interview with Humayon Kabir on July 17th, 2022, conducted by Subat Matin. Humayon Kabir was born in Sandwip, Bangladesh and immigrated to the United States in 1983. Humayon came with a visit visa and almost immediately began working. He worked a construction job alongside his father and brothers and eventually established his own construction business.

Uddin talks about having to leave his family behind after getting married because he needed to provide for them and the only way that was possible was to work abroad and be away from his family for years.
