Uganda refugees were not permitted to take much out of the country, so most of the materials that tell their stories are official documents, such as this passport. After independence of Uganda, Ashraf had the choice to obtain Ugandan citizenship or keep her British citizenship.

Mafruza Begum is the owner of Mersiha Homecare Services LLC in Hamtramck, Michigan. She opened the business in 2014. She was inspired to open a homecare service after her father suffered from a stroke and was unable to find culturally sensitive and Bangla language homecare services for her father. She is one of metro Detroit's Bangladeshi Women Entrepreneurs.

Mafruza Begum moved to New York with her family in 1992. The family later moved to Michigan in 1998 for better socioeconomic opportunities. Her father Md Dula Miah suffered a stroke while caused him to become partially paralyzed and requiring homecare services. The family was unable to find him adequate services in Bangla and with the cultural sensitivities of Bangladeshi family values.
Shamsun Nehar's Cake Designs
Shamsun Nehar created her business Cakes by Lucky in 2014 after taking a cake decorating class, initially as a creative outlet from her day job as an engineer. After encouragement from friends and family, she began decorating and selling cakes with South Asian or desi themes, incorporating designs out of fondant such as saris, dholkis, sherwanis.

Tania Begum was inspired to become a pharmacist, following in her father's footsteps to serve the community in healthcare. In 2013 she and co-owner Mahbubur Motlib opened Community Rx Pharmacy in Warren, Michigan, to serve the growing Bangladeshi community and other diverse communities.

Tania Begum is a community pharmacist who opened Community Rx Pharmacy with co-owner Mahbubur Motlib in 2013. They serve a diverse community of patients who speak various languages, reflected in the staff they hire. Tania says she is most passionate about giving back to the community, and wants to be a resource center for them.
